James R. Modrall, III (Jim) spent many years with the Traverse City firm of Brandt, Fisher, Alward & Roy and its successor, Brandt, Fisher Alward & Pezzetti. In January, 2012, he opened his own firm in Traverse City, Mich., for the practice of Estate Planning, wills, trusts and probate, and the practice of Elder Law. This includes qualification for benefits such as Medicaid and veterans’ pension assistance. He was a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard Law School and is a Certified Public Accountant.
Jim graduated with highest honors in engineering and business administration from the University of Colorado and served in the U.S. Navy as an officer on the carriers Wasp and Yorktown in Far Eastern waters before entering law school. He was first admitted to the bar in Wisconsin and was a partner in the national firm of Foley & Lardner, where he specialized in taxation and estate planning. He lectured in accounting both at Harvard Law School and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Jim is currently a member of the bar in Arizona, Illinois and Michigan, and an active member of the Michigan Bar Sections of Elder Law, Probate and Estate Planning. Jim is also admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States. Jim is active in Elder Law practice and is a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA). He was fully certificated in Probate and Estate Planning by the Michigan Bar Probate and Estate Planning section in 2005, a certification renewed in 2010. In April, 2007, he was awarded the designation “Certified Elder Law Attorney” by the National Elder Law Foundation. He has been accredited by the Veterans Administration to counsel veterans and their surviving spouses on VA benefits and pension assistance.
